Maybe you’ve seen the flyers around campus or the announcements on the TV screen (see above): Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and the Frequency North Reading Series have put together an ongoing event that has the potential to tempt you out of the house and away from your TV on your typical boring Tuesday night.
It’s the Nitty Gritty Slam, and it’s a combined open mic night and poetry slam. Now going into its second season, slams are held every first and third (and occasionally fifth) Tuesday of every month at Valentine’s right in downtown Albany on 17 New Scotland Avenue.
Sign up is at 7:00pm, there is an open mic at 7:30pm and the slam itself starts at 8:00pm. Admission for the event is only $5 and only $3 for those lucky few who remember to bring their student IDs.
And who can resist a night out for less than $10 that has the potential to include cash prizes?
September 4 started off the second season for Nitty Gritty Slam and it is already going strong. September 18 (tonight) will be Slam #26. Don’t waste any more time sitting around trying to figure out what to do on a Tuesday night and come see what it’s all about.
I promise you won’t regret coming out to be a part of the fun, laid-back atmosphere that awaits you at every Nitty Gritty Slam.
P.S. don’t forget about the Grand Slam, Old School Slam’s, Haiku Slams and other special slam later in the season, so tell your family and friends and come on out! More info at nittygrittyslam.com.
